Story

NOTE: I am not open to discussion of my mom’s religious beliefs.

I live in Madison, WI, and have a friend who is affiliated with Abundant Life school. My mom lives about an hour south of here and is a staunch Republican in spite of relying on government services because of her disability.

I, on the other hand, have never voted for a Republican in the 40 years that I have been voting. Her father and mine were both Lutheran pastors, and we have always been very involved in our respective churches.

I want to reply with this:

Twelve years ago last week, 20 first graders were murdered in their classrooms, and instead of rallying around the cause of gun control, the nation was launched on a discussion of whether it actually happened, while congressional Republicans blocked every attempt at legislation. There have been 322 school shootings this year, but you have supported Republicans unconditionally.

So maybe I’m not the person you want to be having this conversation with?

WIBTA? Or should I just ignore her?

Overall, the comments reflect a sentiment that while discussing sensitive topics can be challenging, it may be better to avoid confrontation if it leads to conflict.

Expert Advice for Resolving Family Conflict Over Political Beliefs

Navigating family dynamics, especially when it comes to deeply held political beliefs, can be challenging. Here are some practical steps to help address the conflict between you and your mother while maintaining a respectful relationship.

Steps for Addressing the Conflict

  1. Reflect on Your Goals:

Before engaging in conversation, take a moment to consider what you hope to achieve. Are you looking to change her mind, express your feelings, or simply share your perspective? Understanding your goals can help guide the conversation.

  2. Choose the Right Time and Place:

Find a calm and neutral setting for your discussion. Avoid bringing up sensitive topics during family gatherings or stressful moments. A private conversation can create a more conducive environment for open dialogue.

  3. Use “I” Statements:

When discussing your views, frame your thoughts using “I” statements to express your feelings without sounding accusatory. For example, say, “I feel concerned about gun violence and its impact on our children,” rather than “You don’t care about gun violence.”

  4. Listen Actively:

Encourage your mother to share her perspective. Listening actively can help you understand her views and demonstrate that you value her opinion, even if you disagree. This can foster a more respectful conversation.

  5. Focus on Common Values:

Identify shared values that both you and your mother hold, such as the safety and well-being of children. Emphasizing these commonalities can help bridge the gap between your differing political beliefs.

  6. Suggest Alternative Actions:

Instead of solely discussing political beliefs, propose actionable steps that can be taken to address the issues at hand. For example, suggest supporting local organizations that advocate for gun safety or community programs that promote children’s welfare.

  7. Know When to Walk Away:

If the conversation becomes too heated or unproductive, it’s okay to step back. You can express that you value your relationship and would prefer to discuss the topic at another time when emotions are less charged.

Conclusion

Family relationships can be complex, especially when political beliefs clash. By approaching the conversation with empathy, respect, and a focus on shared values, you can navigate this sensitive topic more effectively. Remember, it’s not always about changing someone’s mind, but rather about fostering understanding and maintaining a loving relationship.
