Update
I actually really appreciate everyone letting me know I was overreacting. I really like my boyfriend and know he’s a great guy, so I was kind of hoping I was in the wrong and I wasn’t misjudging him. Thank you all so much for the perspective!
For context
I, 33F, have been dating my bf, 40M, for about three months. Recently, our city’s football team won a big game. We had a great time celebrating with friends at a bar and were generally very happy about the win!
Later that night, I opened up IG and saw my BF had posted a story. The first story was nothing big, but then I clicked to the second story. It was a video through his front house window of a woman in the opposing team’s jacket before the game doing a TikTok dance saying “before the game,” and then the next story was all of us screaming and cheering at the bar when OUR team won saying “after the game.”
I understand the idea behind what he was doing and know he PERSONALLY isn’t creepy or was trying to be weird, but watching the video of the girl made me feel so creepy and weird. I was really uncomfortable that he filmed someone THROUGH his window. It didn’t sit right.
So I called him. I said, “Hey, so just wanted to let you know that video could be seen as creepy. Imagine if someone recorded me through a window?” He said, “Ummm, okay,” and then not much else. We hung up, and he didn’t say anything to me the rest of the night.
He texted me this morning saying he was upset. I’m not sure how to feel in this situation. The video made me super uncomfortable, but I do know he didn’t mean it from a creepy place because he really isn’t that guy. So I don’t know. AITA in this situation?

Expert Advice for Resolving the Conflict
In navigating the complexities of relationships, especially in the early stages, it’s crucial to approach conflicts with empathy and open communication. Here are some practical steps for both OP and her boyfriend to consider in resolving their disagreement:
For OP:
- Reflect on Your Feelings: Take some time to understand why the video made you uncomfortable. Was it the act of filming someone without their consent, or was it the context in which it was shared? Clarifying your feelings will help you communicate them more effectively.
- Initiate a Calm Conversation: Reach out to your boyfriend when both of you are in a relaxed state. Express your feelings without placing blame. Use “I” statements, such as “I felt uncomfortable when I saw the video because it seemed invasive.” This approach fosters understanding rather than defensiveness.
- Encourage Open Dialogue: Invite him to share his perspective. Ask questions like, “What were you thinking when you posted that video?” This can help both of you understand each other’s viewpoints better.
- Set Boundaries: Discuss what is acceptable behavior regarding filming others in social settings. Establishing mutual boundaries can prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
For the Boyfriend:
- Listen Actively: When OP shares her feelings, listen without interrupting. Acknowledge her discomfort and validate her feelings, even if you didn’t intend to be creepy. This shows that you respect her perspective.
- Reflect on Your Actions: Consider the implications of filming someone without their consent. Understand why this might be perceived as invasive and how it could affect others’ comfort levels.
- Communicate Your Intentions: Share your thought process behind posting the video. Explain that you didn’t mean to upset her and that you value her feelings. This can help bridge the gap between your intentions and her perception.
- Be Open to Change: If OP expresses valid concerns, be willing to adjust your behavior in the future. This demonstrates growth and a commitment to the relationship.
Moving Forward Together:
Both parties should remember that misunderstandings are a natural part of any relationship. By approaching the situation with empathy and a willingness to communicate, OP and her boyfriend can strengthen their bond and build a foundation of trust and respect.
Ultimately, the goal is to foster a relationship where both partners feel heard, valued, and safe. Taking these steps can help ensure that both OP and her boyfriend navigate future conflicts with greater understanding and compassion.
