Story
My boyfriend admitted to not remembering whether he groped one of my friends on a night out. My friend was crying and begging me to believe her, and after pressuring him to tell the truth, he said he couldn’t remember if he touched her up or not, and laughed in my face. I have never once hit him before, but what he said absolutely disgusted and broke me.
Up until this point, he has been the sweetest boyfriend ever, and to have that idea of him shattered in moments broke my heart. It was almost like a reflex when I hit him. What upsets me even more is that when I have tried to speak to him about what happened, he keeps acting like it was no big deal.
My boyfriend and his dad are treating me like I’m insane for being upset about what he did to my friend, and they keep telling me it was just a drunk mistake on his part. My friends have told me I was in the right for hitting him and that he deserved it, but I still feel really guilty. AITA?

For the Woman
- Reflect on Your Feelings: Take some time to process your emotions. Write down your thoughts about the incident, your boyfriend’s behavior, and how it has affected your perception of him.
- Seek Support: Continue to lean on your friends for emotional support. Talking to a trusted friend or therapist can help you gain clarity and validate your feelings.
- Communicate Openly: When you feel ready, have a calm and honest conversation with your boyfriend. Express how his laughter and dismissal made you feel, and emphasize the seriousness of the situation.
- Set Boundaries: If your boyfriend continues to downplay the incident, consider setting clear boundaries regarding what behaviors are unacceptable in your relationship.
- Evaluate the Relationship: Reflect on whether this relationship aligns with your values and needs. If his behavior is a recurring issue, it may be time to consider whether this relationship is healthy for you.
For the Boyfriend
- Take Responsibility: Acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. Avoid dismissing the incident as a “drunk mistake” and recognize the impact of your actions on both your girlfriend and her friend.
- Listen Actively: When discussing the incident, listen to your girlfriend without interrupting. Validate her feelings and show empathy towards her emotional turmoil.
- Apologize Sincerely: If you realize that your actions were inappropriate, offer a genuine apology. Acknowledge the hurt you caused and express your commitment to understanding and changing your behavior.
- Seek Help: Consider talking to a therapist or counselor to address any underlying issues related to alcohol use or inappropriate behavior. This can help you grow and prevent similar incidents in the future.
- Reassess Your Attitude: Reflect on why you laughed during a serious conversation. Understanding your reactions can help you develop a more empathetic approach in the future.
Moving Forward
Both parties should prioritize open communication and mutual respect. It’s essential to create a safe space for discussing feelings and concerns. If the relationship is to continue, both individuals must be willing to work on their issues and support each other through this difficult time.
Ultimately, the goal is to foster understanding and healing, whether that leads to reconciliation or a decision to part ways. Remember, prioritizing emotional well-being and safety is crucial in any relationship.
