Story
So, backstory. My Monkey, 19, female, fiancé Gorilla, 18, male, has a sister Flower, early 20’s, who will always call Gorilla for EVERYTHING.
Not to sound rude, but it’s usually just to complain about her new job that will only last about three weeks before she quits or gets fired. She’s always relied on everyone else to do everything and anything for her, and it really gets on both our nerves.
If she isn’t calling to complain about her life, which is handed to her, then she’s calling Gorilla to ask for favors or money, and it eats me up. Gorilla and I have very little; we currently live with my mom because his family chose to cut him out of their lives, except his siblings.
And his father is deceased, and they were very close. So he works very hard for what little we have, and I appreciate him so much because I’m 6 months pregnant with our first, and I’m currently not employed but plan to be at least 6 months after birth.
My mother treats him like her own, and he is very grateful to have all of us because, like I said, he has no one else. Anyways, back to the point, Flower always loves to call him in the middle of the night.
Even though we have set clear boundaries repeatedly, we’ve asked her not to call past 8:00 PM; she agrees, but it backfires. Last night at 1 AM, she called, and yes, I was awake, but I found it extremely rude and just hung up mid-ring.
Because even though I was awake, Gorilla was asleep, and I’m 6 months pregnant, and I have a very hard time sleeping. It takes me hours to fall asleep, and she knows this.
I know it may have seemed rude to outsiders because she is his sister, but she also needs to learn how to grow up and to respect other people’s boundaries. And of course, she escalated the whole ordeal.

Expert Advice for Resolving the Conflict
Family dynamics can be challenging, especially when boundaries are not respected. In this situation, both Monkey and Gorilla, as well as Flower, have valid feelings and concerns. Here are some practical steps to help resolve the conflict while addressing the needs of all parties involved:
For Monkey and Gorilla
- Communicate Clearly: Sit down together and discuss your feelings about Flower’s behavior. Be honest about how her late-night calls affect you, especially during this critical time in your lives.
- Set Firm Boundaries: Clearly outline what times are acceptable for calls and what types of support you can realistically provide. Make sure Flower understands these boundaries are not negotiable.
- Involve Flower in the Conversation: Consider having a calm and respectful conversation with Flower. Express your concerns directly and give her a chance to share her perspective. This can help her feel heard and may encourage her to be more considerate in the future.
- Offer Alternative Support: If you feel comfortable, suggest other ways Flower can seek support, such as talking to friends or seeking professional help for her job-related stress. This can help alleviate some of the pressure on you both.
For Flower
- Reflect on Your Actions: Take some time to consider how your behavior may be impacting Monkey and Gorilla. Acknowledge that calling late at night can be disruptive and inconsiderate.
- Respect Their Boundaries: Make a conscious effort to adhere to the boundaries set by Monkey and Gorilla. This shows maturity and respect for their needs, especially as they prepare for a new chapter in their lives.
- Seek Other Outlets: Instead of relying heavily on Gorilla for support, explore other avenues for discussing your job frustrations. This could include talking to friends, family members, or even a therapist.
- Communicate Openly: If you feel overwhelmed, reach out to Monkey and Gorilla during appropriate times. Let them know you value their support but also understand their need for boundaries.
Conclusion
Conflict resolution requires empathy and understanding from all parties involved. By fostering open communication and respecting each other’s boundaries, Monkey, Gorilla, and Flower can work towards a healthier relationship. Remember, it’s essential to approach these conversations with kindness and a willingness to listen, as this can lead to a more harmonious family dynamic.
